International Conference on religious radicalization leading to terrorism

  On the 12th of May 2016 an "International Conference on religious radicalization leading to terrorism" was organized in Sofia, Bulgaria.

This event was deployed with the cooperation of the French Cultural Institute of Bulgaria and with the participation of the International Agency for Crime Prevention and Security Policies (IACPSP).

The IACPSP was represented at this conference by Mr. Nikolay Ivanov, an expert who exposed the existing problems in this area in interaction with all the institutions involved in the fight against radicalization and terrorism. Mr. Ivanov referred also to the religious radicalization’s stages. In this regard there were offered various methods for counteracting this phenomenon.

This conference was also attended by some experts from the "Center for the Study of Political Life" CEVIPOL within the Free University of Brussels and by experts in Islamization field.

The main issues discussed during the debates were:

- the importance of ideology and religious radicalization of young people;

- the influence of family, marginalization, social exclusion and unemployment on the process of radicalization.

Other topics approached during this event were:

- ways to prevent radicalization and

- the link between extremist groups and individuals who travel regularly to the regions affected by issues related to terrorism.

At the end of the debate there ware suggested specific actions for dealing with radicalized individuals.

It was underlined to strength the international efforts for a better interaction between the security forces and the civil society.
